Florida Dem: Justice must prevail for Trayvon Martin

Wilson was not specific, but a civil suit may be filed against George Zimmerman, who was found not guilty in his death last February. In addition, thousands of people have petitioned the federal Justice Department to pursue federal civil rights charges against Zimmerman.

{mosads}Zimmerman admitted to following Martin, who he saw as suspicious, after which the two fought and Zimmerman fatally shot Martin.

Wilson said that she accepts the criminal trial against Zimmerman as far as it goes.

“I know within my heart, and will always know, that things should have been different,” she said. “But I accept the law.

“I was one of the loudest voices calling for a fair trial for Trayvon, after he was profiled racially, he was followed, he was harassed, and shot in the heart.”

Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-Texas) spoke just before Wilson, and said she was “proud” of her constituents who have petitioned the federal government for civil rights charges.

After they spoke, Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.) took the floor to say that the U.S. needs to be sure it does not put in place a justice system that is different for people of different races, or with other differences.

“Lady Justice has a blindfold over her eyes, because justice is colorblind,” she said. “Justice shouldn’t look at color of our skin, or our ethnicity or our financial background.”
