Boehner to give his own jobs address one week after Obama

Speaker John Boehner will give his own jobs speech on Sept. 15, one week after the president addresses a joint session of Congress.

The Economic Club of Washington announced Thursday that Boehner (R-Ohio) would deliver a speech on jobs and the economy at the club that day at 1 p.m.

A leadership aide said more details about the speech would be released closer to that date.

{mosads}The speech comes as Republicans move forward with a fall agenda intended to highlight their efforts to help the economy.

House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.) this week unveiled the conference’s plans, which included two tax-cut measures and a series of bills intended to pull back on regulations the GOP argues are hurting the economy.

President Obama is expected to call for some new spending measures to boost economic growth when he addresses a joint session of Congress on Sept. 8. That speech may also include proposals from the president on reducing the deficit.

Obama and Boehner jousted Wednesday on the timing of the speech, with Obama eventually conceding that he would address Congress on Thursday instead of Wednesday, the day he initially requested to visit Congress.

That date coincided with the first GOP presidential debate to include Texas Gov. Rick Perry. Boehner cited security concerns, not the GOP event, in asking that Obama come to the House on Thursday instead of Wednesday.

The White House said it was a mere coincidence that Obama asked to deliver his jobs speech to Congress at the same time as the GOP debate.
