Democratic Rep. Andrews uses Twitter to encourage Wall Street protesters

{mosads}Three hours earlier, Andrews wrote, “America will be better off when our brightest focus more on actual engineering and less on financial engineering.”

That tweet also linked to a column by economist Thomas Friedman encouraging physics and math majors go into traditional engineering rather than financial engineering.

The series began with an anti-corporate message from Andrews: “Corporations aren’t people. The ban on direct contributions by corporations to federal candidates is there for the people.” He sided with a linked New York Times editorial criticizing a Fourth Circuit judge’s ruling that corporations are allowed to directly donate to political campaigns.

Democrats in general have thrown their weight behind the Occupy Wall Street movement. An Oct. 10 email from the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee asked supporters to sign a petition in favor of the movement. House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) has also praised the group.

“The message of the protesters is a message for the establishment everyplace,” Pelosi said. “No longer will the recklessness of some on Wall Street cause massive joblessness on Main Street.”
