Meet the Lawmaker: Rep. Dina Titus (D-Nev.)
What did you want to be when you were young?
Rep. Titus: I wanted to be a tap dancer. I took dance lessons. I do a lot of political tap dancing now, too.
What’s your biggest political achievement?
Rep. Titus: I was in the [Nevada] legislature for 20 years. Saving Red Rock Canyon from development was a pretty good victory for me.
What’s your favorite hobby?
Rep. Titus: I enjoy traveling very much. I also enjoy crossword puzzles, and I’m a pretty good cook. My mother’s Greek, so I like all kinds of Mediterranean food.
What’s been your craziest constituent request?
Rep. Titus: Mine have been pretty sane. Just because I’m from Las Vegas, nothing seems too out of the ordinary.
What is a household chore you dislike?
Rep. Titus: Vacuuming.
If you weren’t yourself, which lawmaker would you prefer to be?
Rep. Titus: Howard Cannon. He was a longtime U.S. senator from Nevada, and when he died, his daughter gave me his desk.
Who is your favorite lawmaker of the opposite party?
Rep. Titus: My uncle was in the state legislature in Georgia, and he was a Republican. He was conservative on fiscal issues but more moderate on social issues. His name was Theo Titus.
Has God ever spoken to you?
Rep. Titus: I believe in the power of prayer. I don’t flatter myself to think he speaks to me directly, but I look for signs. And being Greek, you believe in omens.
