Despite tweets from academy account, Navy-Air Force game still in limbo

The Naval Academy on Wednesday said it was investigating the source of tweets from its Twitter account that appeared to announce that the Navy-Air Force football game would be played.  

On Tuesday, the Defense Department said it was suspending all intercollegiate athletic events for military service academies due to the government shutdown. That threatens to halt the sold-out, nationally televised football game Saturday. 

On Wednesday, the Naval Academy’s Twitter account appeared to announce the game was back on before the tweets were quickly deleted.

Spokesman John Schofield, who manages the account, said he did not know who posted the tweets. One tweet sent out Wednesday afternoon said “Game on! #BeatAirForce.” Another one read, “We’ll see you at Navy-Marine Corps Stadium this Saturday at 1130 or on CBS #CICtrophy#BeatAirForce.”

The Naval Academy has said it would make a decision on the football game by Thursday at noon. The scheduling likely depends on whether members of Congress and President Obama come to a resolution to fund the government.

Another football game between Army and Boston College is scheduled for Saturday in Massachusetts.
