GOP Senate candidates split on shutdown compromise

{mosads}Those supporting the plan: Reps. Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.), Tom Cotton (R-Ark.) and Steve Daines (R-Mont.). Cotton’s vote is notable: He usually votes with hard-line conservatives and is a favorite of the Club for Growth, which opposed the bill. But his opponent, Sen. Mark Pryor (D-Ark.), has been hitting him in ads on the shutdown, and the vote might be a sign those attacks have gained traction.

Capito is the clear front-runner for an open West Virginia seat, while Daines has yet to announce his bid but is widely expected to run for the Senate in Montana.

Republicans facing tough primary battles voted against the plan, however. Reps. Paul Broun (R-Ga.), Phil Gingrey (R-Ga.) and Jack Kingston (R-Ga.), who are facing off in a crowded Georgia primary, all voted against the bill, as did Rep. Bill Cassidy (R-La.).

Cassidy is the clear primary front-runner against Tea Party-backed Rob Maness (R), so it’s somewhat surprising he voted against the plan. Sen. Mary Landrieu (D-La.) penned an op-ed earlier this week blaming House Republicans for the shutdown.
