On Twitter, lawmakers careful on Election Day

Without endorsing any particular candidate, members of Congress from Virginia and New Jersey on Tuesday encouraged their Twitter followers to go vote.

{mosads}Last year, some members received flak for expressing their approval for a particular presidential candidate during the election.

Members of Congress are barred from tweeting about political matters on their official accounts. Many curate multiple handles, one for their reelection and another for their official office.

The polls opened Tuesday in Virginia and New Jersey for the gubernatorial election. New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) is expected to easily win reelection.

In Virginia, Democrat Terry McAuliffe has consistently led in polling ahead of Republican candidate Ken Cuccinelli.

Voters will elect the new Mayor of New York as well in the off-year election.

Thirty-one state ballot initiatives will also be on the ballots in some states, including Texas.
