Barber to run for reelection in 2014

Rep. Ron Barber (Ariz.), one of Democrats’ most vulnerable incumbents, announced Wednesday he will run for reelection in 2014.

{mosads}His possible retirement had been in question following reports Monday that he hadn’t yet decided on running.

“I am focused on doing my job, serving southern Arizona — not reelection. There will be plenty of time next year to talk about the campaign,” Barber said in a statement, according to The Arizona Republic. “But let me be clear — I will be running and am putting everything in place to win.”

Barber has about $770,000 cash in the bank and has filed to run, but had not previously clarified his plans for 2014. He’s facing a rematch with retired United States Air Force colonel Martha McSally.

Their 2012 race was one of the closest in the nation, with Barber winning by about 2,500 votes. That, coupled with the partisan makeup of the district — it leans slightly right — make the 2014 race a top pickup opportunity for Republicans, and Barber is certain to have a tough race on his hands.
