House posts one-month farm bill extension

The office of the House Majority Leader on Tuesday evening posted a six-page bill that would extend federal farm, agriculture and nutrition programs for one month, through the end of January.

The House may decide to take up the bill this week, before it leaves for the Christmas break.

{mosads}However, Senate Democrats have already said they would not consider a short-term extension. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) said the Senate is “not going to do it.”

In the last few weeks, some have said a short-term bill is needed to maintain dairy subsidies, and that allowing these subsidies to expire would lead to higher dairy prices. However, others say there would be no dairy price spike, and that there is no need for a quick extension.

— This story was updated at 6:34 p.m. to clarify that the bill was posted by the House Majority Leader’s office, not the House Rules Committee.
