Eliot Spitzer, wife split after 26 years — on Christmas Eve
Former New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer (D) is divorcing from his wife after 26 years of marriage — and five years after he resigned in disgrace after being busted in a prostitution scandal.
The couple announced the split in a statement released on Christmas Eve.
{mosads}“We regret that our marital relationship has come to an end,” the statement said. “We have agreed not to make any other public statement on this subject.”
Spitzer’s career was wrecked after he was caught seeing call girls from a high-priced prostitution service.
One of the most memorable images of the scandal is of Spitzer’s resignation press conference, where his wife Silda Wall Spitzer stood uncomfortably a few feet to his side.
Spitzer attempted a political comeback this year, unsuccessfully running to become New York’s comptroller. Wall Spitzer was mostly absent for that campaign.
This week, there were published reports in New York linking Spitzer, 54, romantically with Lis Smith, a spokeswoman for Mayor-elect Bill de Blasio.
