Democrat enters Nebraska Senate race

Attorney David Domina will be the first Democrat to enter the race for retiring Sen. Mike Johanns (R-Neb.) seat, according to the Associated Press.

The candidate plans to announce his decision at the state capitol on Tuesday. He’s known within the state for his legal work, most notably representing Nebraska landowners challenging the law that allowed construction of the controversial Keystone XL pipeline to continue.

{mosads}He positioned himself as a problem-solver in the campaign.

“Our country is teetering. It does not feel stable,” Domina said, according to the AP. “We cannot have the strongest and most influential nation on earth, and we cannot be secure at home or away if our divisions and refusal to work together as citizens cause our government to shut down.”

Domina last ran for office in 1986, when he lost the Democratic nomination for governor.

Republicans are heavily favored to retain the seat, and they’re facing a four-way primary between Omaha banker Sid Dinsdale, Omaha attorney Bart McLeay, former Nebraska State Treasurer Shane Osborn and Midland University President Ben Sasse. Former Democrat Jim Jenkins is also running as an independent.
