The veteran news anchor is receiving treatment for multiple myeloma, which affects blood cells in bone marrow, after being diagnosed with cancer in August at the Mayo Clinic.

{mosads}In a statement, Brokaw said he is optimist about his future. As NBC News Special Correspondent, he has continued to work throughout his treatment.

“With the exceptional support of my family, medical team and friends, I am very optimistic about the future and look forward to continuing my life, my work and adventures still to come,” he said.

He said he is grateful for the interest in his health, but wished to keep it a “private matter.”

From 1982 to 2004, Brokaw anchored and managed “NBC Nightly News,” and has remained a prominent political commentator.

He has continued to work as a special correspondent on the network, including on a documentary about the JFK assassination, Winter Olympic coverage, and appearances on the network’s other news shows.
