The next in the Bush dynasty?

George P. Bush (R) has won his GOP primary in Texas, setting him up to win a statewide position and possibly bigger things down the line.

{mosads}Bush, a half-Hispanic attorney, son of former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush (R) and nephew of former President George W. Bush, easily defeated his primary opponent for Texas land commissioner, a powerful position in Texas that often serves as training ground for bigger things in the state.

With 3 percent of results in, Bush led with 75 percent of the vote. The Associated Press has called the race.

The Dallas-based lawyer’s mother is Mexican-American, and he speaks Spanish fluently, a big advantage toward making inroads with Texas’s fast-growing Hispanic community. His family ties have helped him raise huge sums for the race. Some Republicans have already begun discussing him as a potential gubernatorial candidate in a few years.

If Bush wins the general election, a likely scenario in the heavily Republican state, he’d renew the legacy of Bushes in office. There was at least one Bush in elected office from 1981 through 2008.
