Homeland Secretary secretary visits Oso landslide

Department of Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson visited the site of the massive landslide in Oso, Wash., on Sunday.

Sens. Patty Murray (D-Wash.) and Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.) joined Johnson’s tour of the affected area.

{mosads}According to the Bellingham Herald, Johnson urged residents to apply for federal assistance and pledged continued assistance.

“It is clear there is more work to do,” Johnson told the newspaper. “We were here shortly after the disaster occurred, we are here now, and we will continue to be here as the recovery goes on.”

Last week, President Obama declared a major disaster to allow more federal help to the victims of the March 22 landslide. Thirty people died and 13 are still missing.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is expected to build a berm in coming days to prevent river flooding that has resulted from the debris.
