Ukraine leader plots peace plan

Pro-European chocolate billionaire Petro Poroshenko was sworn into office Saturday as Ukraine’s fifth president.

In his inaugural address, lasting less than an hour, Poroshenko mapped out a peace plan to resolve unrest in the conflict-torn eastern region.

{mosads}A delegation of U.S. leaders, including Vice President Joe Biden, Rep. Marcy Kaptur (D-Ohio), Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.), Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) as well as U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine Geoffrey Pyatt and Daniel B. Baer, ambassador to the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, attended the ceremony in Kiev.

The vice president’s office reports that while attending the inauguration, Biden spoke with Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper about supporting a democratic, united Ukraine, according to a White House pool report.

Poroshenko won 54.7 percent of the vote in elections late last month.
