Sierra Club slams McCarthy for flipping
The Sierra Club is blasting House Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) for switching his stance on tax credits for the wind industry.
McCarthy, who is running to become the next House majority leader and is favored to win, previously backed the production tax credit, which has sporadically subsidized the wind industry for roughly 20 years.
{mosads}Well, that’s changed, according to The Wall Street Journal.
“I’ve always supported that in the past temporarily,” McCarthy said in a interview. “But, look at where they are today. Are they at parity now that they can sustain themselves? I think that they are at this point.”
That enraged the Sierra Club and will likely upset fellow green groups.
“Kevin McCarthy apparently thinks the best way to get a promotion is to put on his Koch-brand flip flops,” said Sierra Club spokesman Dave Hamilton. “For years, Congressman McCarthy strongly backed the Wind Production Tax Credit as it supported thousands of California jobs, including many in his own district. “
Hamilton added: “Unfortunately the path to Republican leadership appears to now go straight through the Koch Brothers’ office. McCarthy is toeing the line by joining their call to kill competition from the wind industry by killing the PTC and American jobs right along with it.”
