FAA to July 4 passengers: Leave fireworks at home

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is warning airline passengers who are traveling for the July 4 holiday to leave their fireworks at home.

FAA Administrator Michael Huerta said Monday that federal rules prohibit passengers from carrying fireworks in either their carry-on or checked luggage.

“Safety is our top priority and we want everyone to arrive at their destination safely,” Huerta said in a statement. “The public can help us by leaving these dangerous items out of their luggage.”

{mosads}The FAA said passengers can be fined as much as $75,000 if they are found to have hazardous materials like fireworks in their luggage. The penalty can also include up to 10 years in prison if the hazardous materials are released and lead to an injury or death, the agency added.

The AAA has predicted that 3.1 million U.S. residents will take flights over the July 4 holiday.
