Perry looks to cash in on mug shot

Some sellers — including the Texas governor’s own political action committee —are attempting to cash in on Rick Perry’s mug shot, using the Republican’s slightly-smiling image to hock everything from baby bodysuits to dog t-shirts.

Perry was indicted earlier this month on two felony counts for allegedly abusing his veto power to force the resignation of a Democratic prosecutor. Perry, 64, turned himself in to authorities last week and had his mug shot snapped.

{mosads}Now, as the Washington Times first reported, Perry’s fundraising arm, RickPAC, is offering a shirt emblazoned with a black-and-white version of the police photograph.

The $25 shirts have “wanted” stamped in capitalized, red letters above the top of Perry’s head. Underneath the governor’s photo, in parenthesis, the shirt says, “For securing the border and defeating the Democrats.”

On the back of the shirt is a photo of a county district attorney, Rosemary Lehmberg. Perry called for Lehmberg’s resignation after she pleaded guilty in 2013 to a drunk driving charge. Below Lehmberg’s photo, in parenthesis, the shirt reads: “Driving while intoxicated and perversion of justice.”

RickPAC isn’t the only one aiming to turn Perry’s mug shot into a moneymaker. The company Political Clothing is offering to slap Perry’s mug shot — with the same “Wanted” text added by RickPAC — on just about everything in its store on Zazzle.com. A baby bodysuit on the site with Perry’s face runs $20, while a courier bag will set a buyer back $111.

Another Zazzle.com seller is offering a “Rick Perry mugshot customizable tshirt” for $28.

A designer on the site RedBubble.com has even applied a pop art-style twist to the image of Perry, featuring the mugshot in a series of brightly colored panels on products ranging from a $2 sticker to a $37 iPhone case.
