Former FCC chief appointed to intelligence board

Former Federal Communications Commission head Julius Genachowski has been appointed to President Obama’s advisory board for intelligence.

Genachowski, who led the regulatory commission from 2009-2013, was named to the board on Thursday evening, along with six other people, including UPS Chairman Scott Davis, former Nuclear Regulatory Commission Chairwoman Shirley Ann Jackson and Neal Wolin, the former No. 2 at the Treasury Department.

{mosads}The nonpartisan advisory body is comprised of people outside the government and seeks to improve the way intelligence agencies function, including their organizational structure and compliance with the law.

Since leaving the FCC last year, Genachowski has worked as a managing director at the Carlyle Group, where he has focused on acquisitions in the tech and telecommunications world.  

While in the role of FCC chairman, he expanded broadband Internet access and started the process of freeing up space on the nation’s airwaves for wireless companies to use for people’s cellphones and tablets. He also oversaw Comcast’s acquisition of NBC Universal and blocked AT&T’s bid to buy T-Mobile, which would have resulted in a market with just three major wireless carriers.
