Poll: Dem leads in Michigan Senate race

A new independent poll shows Rep. Gary Peters (D-Mich.) with a solid lead over former Michigan Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land (R) in the Michigan Senate race.

{mosads}The USA Today/Suffolk University poll of likely voters gives Peters 46 percent to Land’s 37 percent support. Ten percent are undecided, and the three other candidates in the race take about 6 percent altogether.

It’s the latest survey to suggest that, of the dozen or so seats where Democrats are on defense, Michigan remains one of their best bets this fall.

A poll conducted for The Detroit News and WDIV-TV out Wednesday gave Peters a double-digit lead over Land, and polling over the month of September has shown the race trending in the Democrat’s direction.

Groups from both parties will continue to pummel the state with attack ads through Election Day, however, so the race could shift.

But the new survey also shows Land has an image problem in the state — while she’s underwater with voters, they are still split over how they feel about Peters.

The survey was conducted among 500 likely voters via landline and cellphone from Sept. 6-10 and has a margin of error of 4.4 percent.
