Private-sector employers added 213,000 jobs in September

Private-sector employers added 213,000 jobs in September as the labor market’s growth remains steady. 

Hiring last month was broad-based across all industries and business sizes with smaller firms leading the way, according to ADP National Employment Report released Wednesday.

August’s figures were revised down slightly to 202,000 from the initial estimate of 204,000.

{mosads}”Especially encouraging most recently is the increasingly broad base nature of those gains,” said Mark Zandi, chief economist of Moody’s Analytics.

“Nearly all industries and companies of all sizes are adding consistently to payrolls.”

Construction added 20,000 jobs, 3,000 fewer than August, while manufacturers hired 35,000 last month, the highest total since May 2010.

The government’s jobs report is due out Friday and Zandi is expecting about a 220,000 gain in employment for September. He also expects that the August number will be revised up by about 30,000. 

August’s figures came in at a disappointing 142,000, which broke a six-month streak of 200,000 jobs a month.

Zandi said he expects that August could eventually show that there were about 200,000 jobs created. 

Meanwhile, small businesses added 88,000 jobs to their payrolls in September, up from 82,000 in August.  

Service-sector employment rose by 155,000 jobs in September, down from 160,000 in August.
