DC hospital treating patient with Ebola-like symptoms

A possible case of Ebola is being investigated at Howard University Hospital in Washington, D.C., on Friday.

“We’ve admitted a patient in stable condition following travel to Nigeria who is presenting symptoms that could possibly be Ebola,” university spokeswoman Kerry-Ann Hamilton told The Hill. She added that the patient has not tested positive.

Howard University president Wayne Frederick said in a statement Friday afternoon that the patient, who remains “low-risk,” was admitted overnight. The D.C. Department of Health also released a statement Friday reiterating that it had not confirmed a case of Ebola and was collaborating with Howard University Hospital and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The Washington case would be the second in the U.S. if confirmed. A Liberian man was diagnosed with the deadly disease at a Dallas hospital on Tuesday; he flew through D.C.’s Dulles International Airport in September on his way to Dallas-Fort Worth. Four other people who had contact with that patient have been quarantined, though none have shown symptoms.

A second-Washington hospital area hospital announced late Friday that a patient in isolation tested negative for Ebola at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital in Rockville, Md.

A hospital in Hawaii also experienced an Ebola scare on Thursday, but the Hawaii Department of Health ruled out the disease as the cause of the patient’s symptoms. 

The patient at Howard University Hospital traveled recently in Nigeria, according to reports. Nigeria experienced only a small outbreak of Ebola — 20 cases were reported as of last week — and has nearly contained the disease.
