Bloomberg gives big to PAC backing Georgia Dem
Former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg is the major donor to a super-PAC backing Democrat Michelle Nunn, who is locked in a tight race for Georgia’s open Senate seat, its Federal Election Commission filing reveals.
{mosads}Bloomberg gave $350,000 to the group Georgians Together. The political action committee has financed an ad campaign designed to paint Nunn’s opponent, David Purdue, as having a bad record on women’s issues.
The modern-day media baron is far-and-away the committee’s biggest benefactor. Since the beginning of 2014, the PAC has raised just over $513,000. The Bloomberg donation was first reported by The Wall Street Journal.
As Bloomberg looks to burnish his legacy and occupy his time after three terms as New York’s mayor, he has emerged as a financial force on issues that have long mattered to him. He has personally financed a push to counteract the force exerted on campaigns by the National Rifle Association. Earlier this month, he announced he was planning to spend $25 million on TV ads to support centrist candidates through his own political action committee.
Perdue and Nunn are in a tight contest for the open seat, but its one that Democrats are feeling more bullish about in recent days. National Democrats just invested $1 million into the race, and a poll out Wednesday showed Nunn up for the first time.
