Ceiling fans face new efficiency standards

The Department of Energy is considering tougher efficiency standards for ceiling fans.

More ceiling fans would be covered under the rules proposed Thursday by the Energy Department’s Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy.

Previously, certain types of ceiling fans were excluded from the efficiency standards.

The efficiency standards would include new testing requirements that measure the airflow and power consumption of ceiling fans running at low and high speeds.

Ceiling fans would also be tested for efficiency in standby mode.

Ceiling fans are the latest household appliance to face new efficiency standards from the Energy Department.

The public has 75 days to comment.
