Kerry, Iran to meet on nuclear talks
Secretary of State John Kerry will meet with his Iranian counterpart on Wednesday to jump-start the next round of nuclear talks between the two countries, The Wall Street Journal reported Monday.
{mosads}U.S. and Iranian officials told the paper that Kerry will meet with Iranian Foreign Affairs Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif to begin the negotiation process. Kerry is reportedly hopeful that they will be able to reach the framework for a deal by March.
The new talks come after negotiations were extended by six months when the parties could not reach a deal on Iran’s nuclear enrichment capabilities in November.
Iran is under particular pressure to make a deal as they continue to suffer from Western sanctions placed on their economy over the nuclear program. Sanctions were placed on new individuals as recently as December.
Some members of Congress welcomed the extension, because it gives them more time to consider other measures against Iran. The administration is reportedly hoping to bypass congressional approval of any deal.
