Boehner uses Taylor Swift to call Obama plan for community college trouble

Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) knew President Obama’s push to make community college free was trouble, and is invoking a little math to tell the president that nothing has changed.

“It sounded exciting at first,” Boehner’s office wrote in a blog post Friday amid a spattering of Taylor Swift gifs from her popular music videos showing her shaking it off, getting hit in the head with a basketball and attacking a vintage hotrod with a golf club.

{mosads}”But then, we got to thinking. Free?! Is he using magic money? Nothing is free,” his staffers wrote, suggesting the Speaker would never, ever back the president’s plan.

Obama’s plan isn’t a beautiful handwritten note, Boehner’s staff says: “The president knows full well there’s no blank space in the taxpayers’ checkbook.”

Boehner’s office points out that Obama’s “free” plan would cost $60 billion over 10 years, according to the White House, and “you can’t just shake it off.”

They warned that the plan’s looks might be deceiving, noting students would be responsible for other fees associated with college past tuition.

Boehner’s office suggests Obama may make a veiled push for tax increases to pay for the plan or “pile up more debt on the very young people this idea is supposed to help.”

“Wouldn’t it be better if we just worked together to lower costs for folks across the board and improve our children’s education?” they add.

The blog post follows the style of Tumblr, a social media platform Swift joined last year. She also holds more than 50 million Twitter followers and her latest album, “1989,” has spent nine weeks in the No. 1 spot on the Billboard Top 200 chart.

Swift has been channeled by other politicians recently. Then-Senate candidate Joni Ernst (R-Iowa) said in early November she would just “shake it off” when retired Sen. Tom Harkin (D-Iowa) compared her looks to that of the popular singer. 

Ernst will deliver the Republican’s rebuttal to Obama’s State of the Union address next week, Boehner and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell announced Thursday.

While Boehner would likely want to trash Obama’s community college plan, his staff want to make clear he’s no crumbled piece of paper.

It’s unclear whether this means Boehner and Obama are ever getting back together.
