Longest streak of falling gas prices ends

The longest consecutive streak of tumbling gas prices ended this week.

Auto group AAA said the 123-day streak came to a halt on Tuesday when the average prices of gas ticked up for the first time since September 25.

However, AAA said that doesn’t mean the end to low gas prices is near. The current national average gas price is $2.04 per gallon.

“With crude oil prices stabilizing during the previous couple of weeks, there is a limit to how much further gas prices can drop,” AAA spokesman Michael Green said.

“There is even a question as to whether the U.S. average price of gas will make it below $2 per gallon. It does not appear that gas prices can drop much further unless crude oil prices begin to decline significantly.”

The most common price at gas stations across the U.S. is $2 per gallon, and 27 states have average prices below $2, AAA said.
