Federalism Not the Answer for Iraq (Sen. John McCain)
I believe that the Biden-Brownback Amendment would require hundreds of thousands of troops to keep the warring parties separate. You would have to divide neighborhoods and bedrooms because Sunni and Shia are married to each other. They are Iraqis first and Sunni and Shia and Kurds second.
I don’t think it’s either workable or compatible with the wishes of the majority of the Iraqi people. Of course, as a federalist, I appreciate a certain amount of autonomy. But certainly I don’t think this is workable and history shows that.
