Baltimore mayor orders citywide curfew
Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake declared a citywide curfew on Monday as protests over the death of a black man in police custody turned violent.
The curfew will go into effect Tuesday at 10 p.m. It will remain in place for a week and be extended as necessary, Rawlings-Blake told reporters.
{mosads}Between the hours of 10 p.m. and 5 a.m., citizens will be ordered to remain off the street unless it’s a “medical emergency or you are going to work,” the mayor said.
Rawlings-Blake, who referred to the rioters as “thugs,” said the city was “deploying every resource possible to gain control of this situation and to ensure peace moving forward.”
Earlier this evening, Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan (R) declared a state of emergency in Baltimore and activated the state’s National Guard in respond to the increasingly violent clashes in the wake of Freddie Gray’s funeral.
Gray, 25, died of a spinal cord injury while in police custody.
