Hillary Tackles Women’s Issues

Noting that March is Women’s History Month, Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-N.Y.) discussed women’s issues in her Hillcast Tuesday.

The 2008 presidential candidate said that while women have made significant progress, they “still earn significantly less money than men for doing the same jobs.” She noted that, on average, women earn 77 cents for every dollar a man makes and that women who work full time stand to “lose a quarter of a million dollars over the course of their careers because of unequal pay practices.”

In response to these statistics, Clinton is introducing the Paycheck Fairness Act. Her legislation would toughen penalties for violating the Equal Pay Act and would enforce equal pay laws for federal employees. It would also prohibit employers from retaliating against employees for discussing their salaries and would require the Department of Labor to continue collecting information on women in the workplace.
