Poll: Hillary tops Trump by just 3 points

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton (D) leads real estate mogul Donald Trump (R) by just 3 percentage votes among registered voters in a hypothetical matchup, according to a new poll.

{mosads}Washington Post/ABC News pollsters found 46 percent support for Clinton, compared with 43 percent for Trump.

The Democratic front-runner has a wider lead over her Republican counterpart among all adults, 51 percent to 39 percent.

However, Trump enjoyed a slight edge over Clinton in terms of cross-party support. Just 14 percent of Republican registered voters said they would lean toward voting for Clinton, while 15 percent of Democrats said they were leaning more toward Trump.

Trump has surged to the top of the GOP field, with 29.8 percent support, according to a RealClearPolitics average of polling.

Another poll released Sunday shows him atop the crowded 2016 Republican presidential field in California.

The USC Dornsife/LA Times Poll found that 24 percent of Republicans said they would support Trump.

That same poll found Clinton leading Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) in California, 42 percent to 26 percent.

But Sanders has taken an edge over Clinton in some critical early states. A CBS News poll out Sunday found Sanders surging to a 10-point lead over Clinton in Iowa, and a 2- point lead over Clinton in New Hampshire.

The Washington Post/ABC News poll of 1,003 adults, conducted by telephone September 7-10, 2015, has a 3.5 percent margin of error.
