Goldman Sachs chief: I have lymphoma

Goldman Sachs chief executive Lloyd Blankfein announced Tuesday he has lymphoma and will be undergoing chemotherapy to treat it.

In a public message, Blankfein said he learned he had the disease after a biopsy last week, and that his doctors believe it is “highly curable.”

“My doctors’ and my own expectation is that I will be cured,” he said.

{mosads}The head of the Wall Street giant said he will be undergoing chemotherapy over the next several months, but that he expects to continue at the investment bank “substantially as normal.” However, he did say he planned to cut back on travel in the immediate future, with the backing of Goldman’s board.

“There are many people who are dealing with cancer every day. I draw on their experiences as I begin my own. I have a lot of energy and I’m anxious to begin the treatment,” he said.

Blankfein becomes the second major finance executive to undergo treatment for cancer, after JPMorgan Chase chief Jamie Dimon announced in 2014 he had been diagnosed with throat cancer. Dimon received treatment and remains at the head of his bank.

Blankfein, along with other major finance executives in and out of Goldman, has been a highly sought political donor for several years. Blankfein identifies himself as a Democrat, but has yet to jump behind any particular candidate in the 2016 field.
