O’Malley: Biden’s generation ‘overly represented’ in Dem race
Former Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley on Tuesday said Vice President Biden’s generation is already represented in the Democratic presidential race.
“I know Vice President Biden very well. I have a tremendous amount of affection and respect for him,” the Democratic presidential candidate said during an appearance on ABC’s “The View.”
{mosads}”If he were to get into this race, he’d certainly would bring a lot of experience and that perspective, but I think his generation is already overly represented in our party in this field,” O’Malley, 52, added.
Biden, 72, is reportedly close to a decision on entering a 2016 Democratic field that includes Hillary Clinton, 67, the longtime front-runner, and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), 74, who so far has been Clinton’s main rival.
“So I’m going to speak to where our country is going,” O’Malley said Tuesday.
“You know, when I talk to young people across our country, I rarely if ever talk to young people that want to deny rights to gay couples or their kids, or want to bash immigrants like Donald Trump,” he said.
Clinton leads the Democratic field with 45 percent in the latest CNN/ORC poll. Sanders took 29 percent and Biden got 18 percent.
O’Malley and other Democratic candidates did not register support in the poll.
“What I hear all across our country is a yearning for new leadership, fresh approaches from a new generation and a proven track record to actually get things done,” O’Malley said Tuesday of how he would challenge Clinton.
“I’ve always led with my principles. I’m not very good at following polls,” O’Malley added.
