Scottish university strips Trump’s honorary degree

A university in Scotland has stripped Donald Trump of an honorary degree in the wake of the Republican presidential candidate’s proposal to ban Muslims from entering the U.S.

A spokesman for Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen said Trump has made statements throughout his campaign “that are wholly incompatible with the ethos and values of the university.”

{mosads}”The university has therefore decided to revoke its award of the honorary degree,” the spokesman added in a statement posted on the university’s Twitter account.

The school said it awarded Trump an honorary Doctor of Business Administration in 2010 “in recognition of his achievements as an entrepreneur and businessman.” The BBC also noted that the real estate tycoon has been dropped as a business ambassador for Scotland.

The fizzled ties come amid global backlash to Trump’s call to temporarily halt the entrance of Muslims into the U.S. amid increasing concerns of terrorism.

U.K. Chancellor George Osborne has also called for robust debate on Trump in order to “defeat nonsense like this.” A Downing Street spokesman also reportedly said there were no plans for Trump to visit the U.K.

Trump’s mother was a Scottish immigrant, and the businessman has ties to the region through his luxury golf course in Aberdeenshire.
