Lead plaintiff in gay marriage case mourns Scalia: ‘Thank you for your service’

Jim Obergefell, the lead plaintiff’s in the blockbuster case that legalized gay marriage across the country last year, on Saturday expressed his sympathy for the passing of one of the court’s most outspoken voices against same-sex marriage.

{mosads}”Thank you for your service to our country, Justice Scalia,” Obergefell tweeted after reports started surfacing of the 79-year-old justice’s death. “Condolences to your family and friends.”

In his dissenting opinion, Antonin Scalia chastised the court for its historic 5-4 ruling in June.

“To allow the policy question of same-sex marriage to be considered and resolved by a select, patrician, highly unrepresentative panel of nine is to violate a principle even more fundamental than no taxation without representation: no social transformation without representation,” he wrote.
