Glenn Beck: Scalia’s death ‘is in the hand of God’

Glenn Beck said late Wednesday that he sees divine intervention in the sudden death of Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia last weekend.

“What I did say is, ‘perhaps God allowed Scalia to die at this time to wake up America up to how close we are to the loss of our freedom,’” he wrote on his Facebook page that evening.

{mosads}“The event is in the hand of God,” the conservative commentator continued. “No matter how the press wants to twist my words or meaning, I stand by we need to be awakened.”

Beck argued that Scalia’s death last Saturday marks a possible sign from above that America is abandoning its traditional values.

“Are we awake to our sorry state?” he asked. “I am not sure. If the freedom that we are about to lose belongs to God for future generations, it would only make sense that he would try to wake us. No?

“I happen to believe in divine providence. Americans historically have. Maybe you do not. This is your choice and I do not mock you for it. Why mock me believing in a traditional view of God?”

Beck added that he remains in the dark about any holy plan for the nation’s direction during next November’s presidential election.

“Who he wants as a president I do not know,” he said of God. “What path he wants America to take to best preserve his rights and roles for us, I do not know.”

Beck originally weighed in on Scalia’s death Tuesday in remarks some media outlets interpreted as support for Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas), a presidential candidate.

“The Constitution is hanging by a thread [and] that thread has just been cut,” said Beck, who supports Cruz’s White House run, according to CNN. “The only way we survive now is if we have a true constitutionalist [as president].”

Scalia’s death leaves his Supreme Court slot vacant as President Obama finishes his last year in the Oval Office. The president is now pressuring the GOP-led Congress to consider confirming a replacement, setting up a major battle before voters elect his successor later this year.
