Clinton: Sanders health plan a ‘train wreck for the poor’

Hillary Clinton went after Bernie Sanders’s policy proposals during Thursday’s Democratic debate, saying the presidential contender’s single-payer healthcare plan would be a “train wreck for the poor.” 

Sanders’s plan “would pose an incredible burden, not just on the budget but on individuals,” Clinton told the debate audience in Brooklyn, accusing Sanders of making costly promises he couldn’t deliver.

Sanders was challenged during the CNN debate over the multitrillion-dollar costs of many of his proposals such as free college tuition and single-payer healthcare.

Clinton portrayed herself during the debate as a pragmatic problem-solver, saying Sanders’s ideas were light on details and unrealistic.

“I do think when you make proposals and you’re running for president, you should be held accountable for whether or not the numbers add up, and whether or not the plans are actually going to work,” she said. 

“My late father said, ‘if somebody promises you something for free, read the fine print,'” Clintonadded, attacking Sanders’s plans for free tuition at public colleges.

The Vermont senator hit back in a debate that saw many testy exchanges between the two candidates.

“What Secretary Clinton is saying is that we are not a country that has the courage to stand up to big money and do what has to be done for the working families of this country,” said Sanders.
