Obamas release 2015 tax returns

President Obama and his wife, Michelle, had an effective federal income tax rate of 18.7 percent in 2015, according to tax returns released Friday.

The Obamas reported adjusted gross income of $436,065 and paid $81,472 in total federal tax. The Obamas also paid $16,017 in Illinois state income tax.

{mosads}The president and first lady had itemized deductions totaling $145,425.

They claimed deductions for state and local income taxes, mortgage interest and charitable contributions. The Obamas reported $64,066 in charitable donations, and the largest reported gift was $9,066 to the Fisher House Foundation, which provides housing for military families while their loved ones are receiving treatment.

Obama’s federal effective income tax rate was slightly lower in 2015 than it was the previous year, when it was 19.6 percent.

Vice President Biden and his wife, Jill, also released their 2015 returns on Friday. The Bidens reported adjusted gross income of $392,233 and paid $91,546 in total federal tax, giving them an effective tax rate of 23.3 percent.

The Bidens jointly paid $13,729 in Delaware income tax, and Jill Biden paid $3,882 in Virginia income tax.
