… On Friday, New York Gov. David Paterson named [Democratic Rep. Kirsten] Gillibrand to the spot.

New York, it is easy for Gotham’s metrosexuals to forget, does not end at Chappaqua. Gillibrand comes from Upstate. She supports the Second Amendment and has been endorsed by the National Rifle Association. Gillibrand is something of a maverick. She not only preaches centrism but practices it. The hopeless left reacted to her ascension with pique.

The machinations regarding the appointment were not always pretty, but Paterson made a good call — indeed the best one. Illinois must be envious.
