Cruz matches Trump in Indiana Google searches

Republican presidential candidate Ted Cruz is generating the same amount of search interest as GOP front-runner Donald Trump in Indiana ahead of Tuesday night’s primary, according to Google Trends. 

{mosads}Over the past 24 hours, the Texas senator has garnered 47 percent of searches for Republican candidates in the state, while Trump has accounted for 46 percent of searches.

Ohio Gov. John Kasich has received 7 percent of search inquiries for GOP candidates in the state over the past day.

Many have called the state make-or-break for Cruz, and public polling has shown him trailing Trump there. The RealClearPolitics average of polls has Trump up more than 10 points. 

Google Trends and other social media analytics are an imperfect measurement and are not meant to be read as actual support among voters. 

While Google’s search results lined up closely with election results in places like New Hampshire, it also showed more interest for Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) in New York last month, where he lost by 35 percent. 

On the Democratic side, Sanders has generated 64 percent of the search interest in Indiana, compared to front-runner Hillary Clinton’s 36 percent. Public polling has shown Clinton with a single-digit lead in the Hoosier State.
