Trump plans visit to Capitol Hill
Donald Trump is planning a visit to Capitol Hill later this month, a signal that the presumptive Republican presidential nominee intends to ramp up his outreach to party leaders and lawmakers.
{mosads}The details are still being worked out, but a congressional source told The Hill his visit is meant to “further the efforts” of the Republican National Committee, National Republican Senatorial Committee and the National Republican Congressional Committee.
Trump may also be looking for a potential running mate at the Capitol. He has said he’s looking for a vice presidential candidate who is a political insider that can help him pass legislation.
Politico first reported Trump’s visit.
The likely GOP nominee has a lot of work to do in convincing party leaders and elected officials that he’s a conservative they can trust. Skeptics also worry he could cost the party majorities in the House and Senate in the fall elections.
Many Republicans, particularly those up for reelection in 2016, are still coming to terms with Trump being the party’s nominee.
On Wednesday, Sens. Kelly Ayotte (R-N.H.), John McCain (R-Ariz.) and Richard Burr (R-N.C.) said they would support the GOP nominee but stopped short of endorsing Trump or even using his name.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) has said that he will support Trump but that the businessman has “an obligation to unite our party around our goals.”
