A top aide to Bernie Sanders early Wednesday slammed the chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee (DNC), saying she is disrespecting the Vermont senator’s presidential campaign.
“We could have a long conversation just about Debbie Wasserman Schultz and how she’s been throwing shade at the Sanders campaign since the very beginning,” Sanders’s campaign manager, Jeff Weaver, said on CNN.
{mosads}“Whether it was the debate schedule that were very few and far between and scheduled on weekends when no one was going to be watching them, whether they shut off Sanders’s access to his own data and we had to sue them in federal court to get them back, whether it was these joint fundraising agreements with the Hillary Clinton campaign which are taking money from the state parties and giving it to the DNC.”
Weaver added that the Sanders campaign’s issues are largely with Wasserman Schultz rather than the DNC itself.
“I’ve got to say — it’s not the DNC,” he said. “By and large, people at the DNC have been very good to us. Debbie Wasserman Schultz is really the exception.”
Wasserman Schultz, a Florida lawmaker, on early Wednesday said that Sanders’s campaign had not adequately denounced violence from its supporters in Nevada last weekend.
“With all due respect, when there is a ‘but’ in between a condemnation of violence generally and after the word ‘but’ you go on to seemingly justify the reason that the violence and intimidating has occurred, then that falls short of making sure that going forward that this kind of conduct doesn’t occur,” she said on CNN’s “New Day.”
Sanders on Tuesday accused the Nevada Democratic Party of abusing its power and unfairly hurting his campaign last weekend.
“The Democratic leadership used its power to prevent a fair and transparent process from taking place,” he said in a statement, adding that claims his backers in Nevada were violent are “nonsense.”
Nevada’s Democratic presidential convention devolved into chaos last Saturday, with Sanders’s supporters loudly protesting the process and booing Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.).
The Nevada State Democratic Party on Monday said that Sanders’s fans’ behavior could trigger “actual violence” at the Democratic National Convention in July.
