California Gov. endorses Kamala Harris’s Senate run
California Attorney General Kamala Harris (D) gained a major endorsement from Democratic Gov. Jerry Brown nearly two weeks ahead of the primary for the open California Senate seat.
{mosads}Brown, a powerful figure in California politics, cited her vast experience as a lawyer. Harris is running for the seat being vacated by Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.). She faces Rep. Loretta Sanchez (D-Calif.) and Republican rivals Tom Del Beccaro and Duf Sundheim.
“She’s strong. She’s intelligent. She knows what she’s doing,” Brown said of Harris. “And the experience of bringing environmental lawsuits, bringing lawsuits against corporate malfeasance and banks, gives her that broad spectrum of experience very much needed.”
“It’s a very good background,” he said about being state attorney general. “And usually it’s a stepping stone to the governorship, but in this case, it’s a very clear pathway to Washington.”
Harris, considered the front-runner, is running in California’s “jungle primary” on June 7, where all candidates run against one another regardless of party.
A Field Poll released in April found that nearly a majority of California voters are undecided, but Harris lead with 27 percent, followed by Sanchez with 14 percent.
