Hillary Clinton on Monday made an appeal to voters who are wary of the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee that she can be trusted while taking aim at presumptive GOP nominee Donald Trump.
“Trust is the glue that holds our democracy together. You’ve got to earn it,” Clinton said at the International Women’s Luncheon at the 50th Annual Rainbow PUSH Coalition Convention in Chicago.
{mosads}She explained that she’s “careful” with her words not because she’s hiding anything, but because “I believe what you say actually matters.”
“To voters that may have doubts, no one will fight harder for you and your families, you can count on that,” she continued. “I’ve been called a lot of things, but quitter is not one of them.”
Clinton has been under fire for the use of a private email server while serving as secretary of State, an issue that has been political fodder for Trump and Republicans during the campaign.
Clinton also took aim at the presumptive GOP nominee, arguing that he is running for the White House for selfish reasons and not to help Americans. She condemned his rhetoric following the Orlando mass shooting and Britain’s vote to leave the European Union.
“We’re up against a man with dangerous, incoherent ideas for our future,” Clinton said. “He’s not in this for the American people; he’s in this for himself.
“That’s why even if I weren’t running for president, I’d do everything we could so he never becomes our commander in chief,” she added.
The former secretary of State also took some veiled shots at Trump while touting the ability of women to serve as leaders. She called on Americans to listen and unify and drown out the political noise.
“If you noticed, women can get stuff done,” Clinton said. “There are a lot of great men doing amazing work, but we really do need to start listening to each other.
“There’s too much finger-pointing and scape-goating,” she added. “We need to start recognizing our common humanity. That requires us to listen, especially in the loud, aggressive world of politics.”
