A British man who tried to disarm a cop at a Donald Trump rally and later told police he had planned to kill the candidate has been indicted on federal charges.
Michael Sandford allegedly tried to steal a police officer’s gun in order to shoot the presumptive GOP presidential nominee during a Trump rally earlier this month in Las Vegas, The Guardian reported.
{mosads}He was taken into custody and told police he had been trying to kill Trump.
Sandford was charged Wednesday with two counts of possession of a firearm by an illegal alien and one count of impending and disrupting the orderly conduct of government business and official functions, according to The Guardian.
He could face up to 10 years in prison if convicted.
The day before the rally, Sandford allegedly went to a gun range to practice shooting.
Sandford also held a ticket to Trump’s rally in Phoenix, Ariz., which was scheduled for later that day.
Sandford’s father, Paul Davey, said his son would never hurt anyone.
“He’s never shown any violent tendencies before, he’s never been a bad person, he’s a nice kid and literally wouldn’t hurt a fly — he used to tell us not to use fly spray because he didn’t want any flies to die,” Davey told the Portsmouth News.
He said his son must have been “radicalized” by someone into attacking Trump.
“Whether he’s been blackmailed or put up to it, that’s the only thing me and his mum can think of.”
Sandford is scheduled to be arraigned on July 6.
Trump said after the incident he learned about it from watching TV, not from his Secret Service. He noted that his Secret Service are “probably … better off not telling me about it.” He also praised the hard work of law enforcement in protecting his safety on the campaign trail.
“We have tremendous Secret Service and we have tremendous police throughout this country and they do a fantastic job. The policeman whose gun was tried to be, you know, stolen by this maniac was really fantastic,” he said.
“These people are great, but they don’t get the credit they deserve. I deal with them all the time. I see them. I watch them. I know them. Terrific, terrific people.”
