New regs for Tuesday: Fruit, prison
Tuesday’s edition of the Federal Register contains new rules for imported fruit and an accounting of prison costs.
Here’s what is happening:
Fruit: The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is releasing a pest risk analysis for fresh star apple fruit imported from Vietnam.
The USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service said Monday that risks can be contained by using designated phytosanitary measures, which would prevent any plant pests from being imported to the United States.
The public has 60 days to comment.
Jail: The Bureau of Prisons is reporting the average cost of locking someone up behind bars.
In 2015, the cost of incarceration was $31,977 for federal inmates, which came out to about $87.61 each day. While the cost of housing a former inmate in a residential re-entry program was $26,082 for the year, or $71.46 each day.
