Hillary Clinton’s chief strategist on Thursday defended the Democratic presidential nominee’s availability to the press, pushing back on criticism that the candidate hasn’t held a press conference for months.
“She has answered hundreds, if not thousands of questions from reporters in one-on-one interviews,” Clinton senior strategist Joel Benenson told ABC News.
“We’ll have a press conference when we want to have a press conference, there’s no problem with that,” he continued.
Clinton’s campaign has defended itself from criticism this week that she has not held any press conferences this year.
While the candidate has done a number of one-on-one interviews, she has not answered questions in a press conference setting since Dec. 4, 2015, according to The Washington Post.
Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump on Wednesday criticized the media for not pushing more aggressively for a press conference with Clinton.
“It’s been 235 days since Crooked Hillary Clinton has had a press conference,” Trump told reporters during his own sprawling news conference at his Miami-area hotel.
“I’ll tell you why: Despite the nice platitudes, she’s been a mess,” Trump said.
Clinton is slated to accept her party’s presidential nomination in Philadelphia on Thursday night.
