Poll: GOP viewed less favorably after convention
Americans view the Republican Party less favorably following its national convention, while views of the Democratic Party are split following their event, according to a new poll.
More than half of those surveyed by Gallup, 52 percent, said they have a less favorable view of the GOP following last month’s convention in Cleveland, and 35 percent said they now have a more favorable view of the party.
{mosads}By comparison, Americans are split on last week’s Democratic convention: 44 percent said the convention left them viewing the party more favorably, and 42 percent said it hurt their perceptions.
Similarly, slightly more respondents, 45 percent, said they were more likely to vote for Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton than those who said they would not support her, 41 percent.
Americans, 51 percent to 36 percent, said they were less likely to vote for Republican nominee Donald Trump.
Despite the negative views, Trump saw a bounce of support in polls after the four-day GOP convention, putting him even or ahead of Clinton for the first time in roughly a month.
Democrats are eyeing their own bounce after their event. Clinton had a 7-point lead in a CBS poll released Monday.
The Gallup poll of 1,000 adults was conducted by telephone in the days immediately following each convention. Polling for the GOP’s convention in Cleveland was conducted July 23-24 and polling for the Democratic convention in Philadelphia was conducted July 29-30. The new survey has a margin of error of 4 points.
