Green groups hit the air for Florida Republican
An environmental group is hitting the airwaves to support a vulnerable Republican congressman in Florida.
EDF Action, the political arm of the Environmental Defense Fund, released an ad backing Rep. Carlos Curbelo’s reelection campaign on Monday. The group highlighted Curbelo’s work on dangers facing the Everglades and his support for a toxic chemicals reform bill signed into law earlier this year.
{mosads}”Congressman Carlos Curbelo: he’s fighting to restore the Everglades, defending its future and our health,” the ad said.
“Curbelo also fought to keep our kids safe from toxic chemicals and is addressing climate change to protect our coastlines. Carlos Curbelo: a Republican seeking solutions not excuses.”
EDF Action traditionally supports Democrats and all $1.3 million it has spent so far this cycle has gone in their favor, according to the Center for Responsive Politics (CRP). But the group did spend $759,000 supporting Republican candidates in 2014, out of $2.9 million total.
Curbelo is one of a group of House Republicans to acknowledge climate change and call for action on it.
He holds a southern Florida seat that’s expected to be one of the most contested House races this year; the Cook Political Report considers it a toss-up so far.
The race has seen only $155,000 in outside money so far this cycle, according to the CRP. More than $50,000 of that came from ClearPath Action, a center-right environmental group that supports Republicans.
