Mexican official who helped arrange Trump visit resigns: report

Mexican Finance Minister Luis Videgaray has reportedly resigned after helping to arrange Donald Trump’s visit to Mexico last week.

Social Development Minister Jose Antonio Meade will take over Videgaray’s position, The Wall Street Journal reported.

{mosads}Reports surfaced that it was Videgaray’s idea to invite the Republican presidential nominee to Mexico, though Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto later said it was his own decision, according to the publication.

CNBC reported that Videgaray helped to arrange Trump’s visit.

Videgaray will reportedly not be assuming another public post, Reuters said.

Trump met with Peña Nieto last week ahead of a speech the GOP nominee gave later in the day in Phoenix, Ariz., on immigration. 

The visit sparked new controversy over who would pay for Trump’s proposed wall along the southern border.

Videgaray in March said during an interview that “there is no scenario in which Mexico will pay for” the wall.

“Building a wall between Mexico and the United States is a terrible idea. It is an idea based on ignorance and has no foundation in the reality of North American integration,” he said in March.
